- Samoyed FAQ
Are Samoyeds too hot in the summer?
Sammies get hot just like everyone else when the temperatures climb. However, they do have a multi-layered coat which keeps the heat out, helping them stay cooler in the summer. We provide our dogs with a swamp cooler, access in and out of the house, shade and a wading pool for their comfort. Of course, Redding is always over a hundred degrees, often nearing 120 degrees! Remember, if you don't give them a cool place, they will find one themselves, usually your flower beds or lawn. Also, never clip a Sammy - it hurts their pride and isn't good for their skin, either.
Do Samoyeds shed a lot?
YES! But, it is usually just twice a year (when they 'blow' their coat.) The giant clumps and long guard hairs are very easy to vacuum. We love sitting in front of the TV and 'creating' another Samoyed by just brushing one blowing coat (you should see the giant piles of hair from just one brushing!)
Are Sammies good family & watchdogs?
Excellent. They have a mild disposition, but will bark and not allow strangers to approach unannounced.
What were Samoyeds bred for?
Originally, they were working dogs - they do have a herding instinct and we use ours to herd our livestock on the farm. They were kept with the family at night on the Tundra and used to keep the children warm. During the day, they pulled sledges or even herded reindeer. Now, we have all kinds of events that Sammies are participating in - Agility, Obedience, Weight Pulling, Sled Racing, Skijoring, Herding, and, of course, Conformation.
Please feel free to ask us any further questions that you may have, we might even add it, and the answer, to our list!
